Policies/Expectations

Parent/Guardian Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Support your child in fulfilling their responsibilities and expectations:

  • Showing up to each and every lesson and/or recital

  • Students need reinforcement and encouragement to practice

  • Trying different methods at home to encourage practice: sticker chart for tracking days of practice, reward for playing a song all the way through with no mistakes

  • Use encouraging words during practice "“you can do it” “it’s okay if you're stuck keep trying!"

  • Use the practicespace app to encourage motivation! Students can earn prizes and achievement awards by logging in practice time on the app

  • COMMUNICATE with the instructor about any concerns or questions related to song choice, practice help, recitals, lessons, scheduling, etc. We are here to help in anyway we can and would love to answer your questions or hear any feedback

Student Expectations and Responsbilities

  • Students should have a consistent and regular practice routine for each week of at least 15-20 minutes a day (for beginners), or 30-60 minutes (for advanced) a day each week. Each week should include at least 4-5 days of practice (7 days of practice gives achievement unlocked in the practicespace app!)

  • All assignments should be completed within that week and songs prepared and ready to be played for each lesson. Any concerns or issues on not knowing how to play the song can be addressed in the following lessons.

  • Students should reflect and use any tips, goals, or methods demonstrated or described by the instructor in their own practice at home.

Instructor Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Provide each student with attention, respect, and patience in every lesson

  • Support, guide, and teach each student the necessary tools/methods in understanding the music and furthering musical skills/abilities

  • Encourage creativity, games, or other fun tools to make lesson more engaging, interesting, and joyful

  • Teach a variety of genres and offer different styles to learn

  • Teach theory: the rules and constructs behind music

  • Teach technique: proper hand placement, dynamics, how to produce the desired sound

  • Report the progress and any concerns or issues with the parent/guardian

Absences & Makeup Policies

  • Makeup lessons are used when a student or instructor needs to miss one or two lessons in the month and we need to reschedule for another day.

  • Please read the following makeup policies:

  • There will be NO makeups done and NO refunds allowed for SAME day of lesson cancellations/no shows and it will be counted as a paid lesson (unless extreme circumstance/family emergency). If told BEFORE day of lesson, then makeups will be allowed.

  • If you will be missing 3 or more lessons in one month please plan ahead to NOT be charged for that month and cancel lessons for that month

  • Planned vacations and longer outings should be informed of at least 1-2 weeks in advance BEFORE lesson to plan rescheduling

Practice

  • Practice is extremely important in reataining information and mastering skills learned in class on piano

  • Practice is just as important as schoolwork

  • You get out of it what you put into it! Spend some time on practicing to grow and get better

  • Practice tips:

  • Establish a practice routine of same time and same days each week

  • Provide reward for encouragement if lack of motivation to practice (using a sticker chart to fill out practice days or giving a prize once a week or once a month for practicing well)

  • Provide words of encouragement while practicing “you can do it” “it’s okay if you're stuck keep trying”

  • Allow student to have free time on the piano for the first few minutes playing anything they want before practicing repertoire

  • Help student by showing them their hand position, especially for ages 7 and under

  • If student is having a lot of trouble remembering how to play anything at all please reach out to me and I will aid you!
